Family wins jury award in surgical negligence case
It can be very harmful when a medical professional commits negligence while performing a surgical procedure on a patient. Thus, it is very important for medical professionals to act properly when providing surgical care. No patient should have to have his or her health and/or life put at risk because a medical professional acted negligently in connection to a surgery.
Recently, a jury reached its decision in a case from Illinois involving allegations of surgical negligence. The case involved a man who reportedly underwent a surgical procedure in January of 2007. The surgery reportedly involved the removal of the man’s spleen. The doctors who performed this spleen surgery reportedly used a robotic surgical system during the procedure.
The man’s family alleged that the doctors who performed the surgery acted negligently during the procedure and punctured the man’s small intestine by mistake. The man’s family claimed that this alleged surgical negligence led to the man dying.
The man’s family brought a lawsuit against the above-mentioned doctors in connection to these allegations. A three-week trial was held in connection to this lawsuit. As we mentioned above, the jury in this case recently reached its decision. According to the article on WLS-TV’s website which reported this story, the jury ruled against the doctors and awarded the man’s family a monetary judgment.
As this case illustrates, surgical negligence by medical professionals can sometimes have fatal results. Thus, one hopes that all medical professionals make sure to not commit negligence when providing patients with surgical care.
